Search Hints

For your convenience and overview, RefScout® collects the key words in a table format. In order to refine your search results, combine your key words by boolean operators. Every key word filled in one line will be combined by the respective boolean operator preceding the filled in key word, e.g.

Finds all abstracts, which contain "vaccination" and "HIV"
and and ( or ) not
Finds all abstracts, which contain "vaccination" and "HIV" and "Tcell"
and and ( or ) not

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why do I get too many abstracts?
A: The key words are not defined enough. Combine two or more key words by "AND" to refine your search. E.g.: Vaccination AND HIV
    
Q: Why do I still get too many abstracts?
A: Refine your key words by excluding abstracts using the term "NOT". E.g.: Vaccination NOT primates
    
Q: Why do I get so little abstracts?
A: Combine key words with possible variations of abbreviations by "OR". E.g. CD4 OR T helper cells
    
Q: Why do I miss some abstracts?
A: Check spelling. Consider "Mueller" or "Müller", instead of "Mueller" only.
    
Q: What does RefScout® abstract delivery service cost?
A: Nothing, the RefScout® abstract delivery service is for free.
    
Q: Can I change my keywords?
A: Yes, log in with your user name and password and change your key words, and the new key word collection is applied to your next weeks delivery.
    
Q: Do I have to define my key words in english?
A: Yes, english is the only language supported by RefScout® at the moment.
    
Q: Can I search for authors including initials?
A: Yes. According to different strategies at different journals, always search for name and initials plus name and forename. An example search strategy for the author John R. Smith looks: J R Smith OR John R Smith (Cave: No dots, but space at initials).
    
Q: Why do foreign characters not appear correctly in the E-Mails I receive from RefScout®?
A: In order to display foreign characters in certain articles in your abstract e-mail correctly, you need an e-mail application which supports foreign character display. Specifically, we support the following e-mail applications at the time being: Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Netscape Messenger, and any other Unicode/UTF-capable mail client. If you are using Netscape Messenger and foreign characters do not display correctly, please select the menu option "View --> Encoding --> UTF-8".
    
Q: Can I download the references delivered by RefScout® into my local reference managing program?
A: Yes.

1) Save the references by either clicking on the ID no. for single export or by hitting the check box next to the ID number and pressing the "export selected" button at the end of every newsletter for multiple export.

2) By doing so, save the references as text files.

3) Follow the import instructions of your reference managing program using the filters "NLM MEDLINE (including UI)".
    
Q: Why do I not get any newsletter?
A: Please check your email address. If it is not correct, we can neither send you the newsletter nor contact you.
    
Q: Why can I not read RefScout®'s newsletter?
A: Please send newsletter that you can't read back to us to info@refscout.com, including information about your operating system and mail client software you use, and we will do our best to solve the problem.
    
Q: Can I get access to full text articles for the listed references?
A: Yes. Clicking on the title of the a reference will guide you to the PubMed citation, from where you can get the full text article as well as all other PubMed services.
    
Q: Can I change my login and password?
A: Yes. Login to your personal profile page with your automatically generated login and password for a last time. At the very bottom of your personal profile page, you will find the option to change your login and password.
    
Q: Can I search for review articles?
A: Yes. Connect your key word with "AND review OR reviews" in your search profile.
